Salons
Historically, French Salons were hosted by Salon Women to experience “les agreements de la vie” - the pleasures of life (good friendship, stimulating conversation, fascinating ideas, fine literature and art). Naturally, delicious food and snacks were a feature of all salons.
In the tradition of famous Jewish ‘salon women’ such as Rachel Levy Varnhagen (n the 1790s) and Gertrude Stein (in the 20th century), Ahavat Torah holds Jewish-themed salons three or four times a year on Sundays from 2-4 PM. We have welcomed such important presenters as Maggie Anton, Esther Blachman, Ellen DuBois, Jean Katz, Moshe Lazar, Ginette A. Mizraki, Gloria Ornstein, and Florence Weinberger. We have many other notable creators in the arts and letters in our congregation, including Dr. Leonard Felder.
We invite all to become “salon frequenters” (currently on Zoom) and meet the important thinkers and creators of our time in person, have them sign books, and share in lively conversation. For more information about our salons, please call the Ahavat Torah phone line (310) 625-3146 and leave a message.
